Mendelssohn Trio 2nd movement, March 2024

Hong Kong-born cellist Hei Chit Wong is an active performer, appearing in venues such as Hong Kong City Hall, Ravello Festival (Italy), Ferrandou Musique (France), Petworth Festival (UK), and the Romanian Athenaeum.

Driven by a passion for chamber music, Wong founded the Hygge Trio at the Royal Academy of Music, dedicated to promoting the repertoire of the clarinet trio. Since its inception, the trio has performed extensively to audiences across the UK and Europe, with upcoming engagements in China.

Aside from the classical repertoire, Wong has a huge interest in performing contemporary works. Wong was invited to premiere Fiach by Linda Buckley for the bicentenary celebration of the Royal Academy of Music. He was also invited to perform a contemporary opera based on the Chinese novel “Journey to the West” at the Tête à Tête Opera Festival 2023.

In addition to his chamber and solo endeavours, Wong thrives in orchestral settings, having led the Royal Academy Opera in a double bill of comic operas by Ravel and Puccini. He has played under the baton of Sir Antonio Pappano, Ryan Bancroft, John Wilson, and Joseph Bastion. He recently went on an 8-city UK tour with the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra. He was previously a member of the Royal Opera House Mentoring Scheme 2023-2024, and will be starting his fellowship at the Sinfonia Smith Square in the 2025-2026 season.

Wong’s dedication to musical excellence extends to his academic pursuits. He recently earned a Master of Music degree from the Royal Academy of Music under the guidance of Felix Schmidt, following his undergraduate studies at Hong Kong Baptist University with Ray Wang. Wong’s artistry has been enriched by artists like Tim Lowe, Alisa Weilerstein, Hannah Roberts, Colin Carr, Julian Steckel, and Sung-Won Yang. Wong conducted a research project on pizzicato in cello playing and presented a lecture-recital exploring the folk song elements and hybridity in Bright Sheng’s “Seven Tunes Heard in China.”
